Guglielmo’s goal in third OT sends St. Thomas to state lacrosse final

Joey Guglielmo’s goal with 7.8 seconds left in the third overtime gave the St. Thomas Aquinas boys’ lacrosse team an 11-10 victory against Benjamin in the FHSAA state semifinals Friday evening at Jupiter High School.

The Raiders (19-0) will face Ponte Vedra for the state title at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Raiders’ only loss last season was in the state championship game to Orlando-Lake Highland Prep, which had won state titles from 2013 to ’15, but lost to Ponte Vedra earlier Friday.

It was a game that featured five lead changes and nine ties. The biggest lead either team had was when Benjamin scored three consecutive goals in the third quarter to go ahead 7-5.

“Over the past five years, we’ve had I don’t even know how many games with them just like this,” Raiders coach Terry Crowley said of Benjamin, which beat St. Thomas Aquinas in the state semifinals two years ago. “This goes back to the club days when we played for the state title.”

Guglielmo won it with his third goal of the game. Teammate Louie Yovino also had three goals, the last of which tied the score at 10 with 1:09 remaining.

“Louie Yovino is the backbone of our team,” Crowley said “I think we key off him. Whether they cut him off or not, he’s just the guy.”

Raiders goaltender Michael Adler shut out the Buccaneers (15-6) for the final 18 minutes 41 seconds.

“Mikey Adler is a Division I player going to [St. Joseph’s]. He’s a three-year starter for us,” Crowley said. “He did a phenomenal job. Down the stretch, he made unbelievable stops.”

Buccaneers freshman Michael Lobosco scored with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter to give Benjamin its seventh and final lead of the game.

“We said going into the third overtime period, ‘This is a family. They’re cutting us off all over the place. The next member has got to step up.’ Obviously, Googie did that,” Crowley said.

Colin O’Hare scored four of Benjamin’s first seven goals and assisted on the eighth, and Christian Cropp scored twice.
