Janney, Brown, Parker combine to lead Palmetto

Dylan Janney registered 10 kills and seven blocks to lead the Palmetto boys’ volleyball team to a four-set victory over Coral Reef in a District 16 semifinal match on Tuesday afternoon.

Alex Brown had 21 kills and Nate Parker had 12 digs and 10 points for the Panthers. Hugo Henry added 13 kills and six digs, and Andres Cowley had 40 assists.

The Panthers will advance to play Killian in the finals after the Cougars defeated TERRA (25-10, 25-17, 25-19).

Mourning’s pitcher, Marcel Guardarrama (6-4), has signed with Palm Beach State College. Guardarrama finished with a 2.78 ERA and 84 strikeouts this past season.

The Mourning volleyball team won its second consecutive GMAC volleyball championship. Will Zuluaga paced the Sharks throughout the tournament with 19 kills and 18 digs. The Miami High flag football team won the inaugural GMAC championship tournament. Jeri Richard scored two touchdowns to lead the Stingarees to a win in the final over Jackson.


Kendrick Pico, South Dade, baseball: Pico entered the district championship game in relief of Alek Manoah with the Bucs trailing 3-1 and completed the game by pitching five shutout innings, striking out 7 and allowing only two hits to help the Bucs rally.

Danny San Pedro, Florida Christian, baseball: San Pedro struck out six in five innings as the Patriots took home the District 8-4A championship with a 9-4 victory over Westminster Christian.

Sydney Lageyre, Doral Academy, softball: Lageyre had five RBI and went 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the Firebirds to a 16-1 win over South Broward in the Region 4-7A quarterfinals.

Ally Mena, Westminster Christian, softball: Mena hit two home runs to lead the Warriors to a 6-2 win over Chaminade-Madonna in a Region 4-4A semifinal.

Tyrese Cooper, American, boys’ track and field: Cooper won the 100, 200 and 400 meters and helped the Patriots win the 1,600 relay at the District 15-4A championships.

Symone Mason, Southridge, girls’ track and field: Mason won the 200 and 400 meters and was part of the winning 400 and 1,600 meter relays at the District 16-4A championships.

C.J. Hassan, Gulliver, boys’ lacrosse: Hassan had two goals, an assist and six ground balls in a 7-5 win over Belen Jesuit in the second round of state play-in games.

Freshman Tristen Casas’ three-run home run in the third inning held up and Izzy Cordero scattered five hits in five innings for the win as the American Heritage baseball team shocked Archbishop McCarthy, ranked No. 2 by USA Today, 5-0 for the District 15-6A title.


Alexa Cruz, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ track: Cruz won the 1,600, the 3,200 and led the winning 3,200 relay team to help the Raiders win the District 13-4A title.

Ryan Seilkop, Chaminade, boys’ volleyball: Seilkop had 15 points, 14 assists and nine kills to lead the Lions over St. Thomas Aquinas in four sets.

Savannah Crump, Calvary Christian, softball: Crump threw a one hitter and struck out 17 to lead the Eagles over Florida Christian 2-0 in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals.

Danyelle Besancon, Western, flag football: Besancon returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown to lead the Wildcats over West Broward 22-7.

Ambresha Long, Coconut Creek, flag football: Long scored three touchdowns to lead the Cougars (12-0) over Coral Glades 39-0.

Harrison Netburn, Coral Springs, boys’ volleyball: Netburn had six points and 17 assists to lead the Colts over Pines Charter in four sets.

J.T. Martin, Cardinal Gibbons, boys’ volleyball: Martin had 13 kills, 10 points, eight blocks and five digs to lead the Chiefs over Boca Raton in three sets.

John McKenna, Douglas, baseball: McKenna hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Eagles past Coral Springs 4-3 for the District 11-9A title.

Christopher Julien, Highlands Christian, boys’ track: Julien won the 100 and 200 to lead the Knights to the District 13-1A title.
