Some more of South Florida’s best boys’ basketball players were recognized Thursday by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches when their Class 8A and 7A teams were released.

Coral Springs guard Myron Dewar, who led Broward County in scoring with 29 points per game and led the Colts to their first state championship, earned first-team honors.

South Miami guard Zach Dawson also made first team after propelling the Cobras to the state final four in Class 8A.

Blanche Ely’s Trevor Goodrum earned a place on the Class 7A first team after helping the Tigers win another state championship. Mater Academy forward Rafael Diaz joined him on the first team.

Also making the Class 8A squad on second team was Taravella’s Anthony Biggs. Four players — Flanagan’s George Allen, Miami High’s Marlon Sierra, Cypress Bay’s Jordan Davis and Coral Gables’ P.J. Hall — made third team.

Mater Academy’s Dylan Frye made second team in Class 7A along with McArthur’s Nate Johnson. Blanche Ely guard Mark Houston made third team.

FOOTBALL

Belen Jesuit knew it was crossing the Atlantic Ocean to open next football season.

On Thursday, it was announced which team the Wolverines would play.

As part of the American Football Showcase on Sept. 2 in Dublin, Ireland, Belen will take on Georgia’s Marist High.

Belen is one of six teams that will compete in the three-game event held at Dublin’s Trinity College.

Marist played a South Florida team last season, losing to Coconut Creek 41-21 in the Battle of the Borders Classic in Georgia.

“Marist is a Georgia powerhouse and a well-coached, disciplined team,” Belen coach Rich Stuart said. “Marist never beats themselves with mistakes. They are always ready to play with intensity, they rise above adversity and Marist never quits.”

As part of the event, which will be conducted in conjunction with the Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Boston College and Georgia Tech, the participating schools will be involved in a pep rally and parade as educational tours during their stay in Dublin.

“Playing the three games at historic Trinity College Dublin is going to be an unbelievable experience and a beautiful setting for the players and fans,” Stuart said.
