South Miami and Coral Gables advance to District 14-9A softball championship game
South Miami survived and moved into the District 14-9A championship game after beating Coral Park 7-6 in a semifinal game on Wednesday.
The Cobras (13-4) will face Coral Gables after the Cavaliers (12-9) beat Miami High 11-7.
South Miami didn’t have an easy game as it fell behind 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Cobras plated five runs in the inning and took control of the game. Coral Park (6-12) trailed 7-4 heading into the seventh before scoring twice to make things close.
Pitcher Emily Perretta gave up three hits and struck out 11 for the Cobras in picking up the complete game victory. Maykeli Alvarez had a double and two RBI, Amanda Martinez scored twice and Adalyn Hernandez stole a base and scored.
For Coral Gables, Emma Cavo (5-3) picked up the victory after striking out six. Ali Bonilla was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBI, Rebecca Rodriguez stole a pair of bases and drove in two runs and Victoria Garcia scored twice.
South Miami and Coral Gables will play for the district title Friday at 4 p.m. at Coral Park. The winner will play host to Dr. Krop in the regional opener; the loser travels to American.

TRACK & FIELD
Monsignor Pace’s boys and Ransom Everglades’ girls each won the team championships of the District 16-2A track meet at Tropical Park Wednesday.
Alvin McCray and Rubin Smith-Bastian led Pace. McCray won the high jump and triple jump and Smith-Bastian swept both hurdles events. Booker T. Washington’s Tyquan Thornton swept the boys’ sprints winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter races.
On the girls’ side, Ransom was led by thrower Debbie Ajagbe, who won the shot put and discus. Jackson’s Tiara McMinn (100 and 300 hurdles, high jump) and Gulliver’s Jazmyn Smith (100, 200, long jump) each won three events, and Natalie Varela won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

BASKETBALL
South Florida was well represented when the FABC’s Class 6A All-State team was released Wednesday.
Norland senior and McDonald’s All-American Dewan Huell was joined by Dillard’s Jordan Wright and Miami Central’s Anthony Wilson on Class 6A first team.
Wright led Dillard to its first state championship since 2008 after ousting Huell and Norland in the regional final round and ending the Vikings’ four-year reign as state champions. Wilson led the Rockets to the regional semifinals.
Dillard also had RaiQuan Gray make second team and Boyd Anderson’s Brian Patrick made third team.

Cooper City had five athletes sign with colleges this week. Malik McFarlane (football) signed with St. Francis (Pa.), Carly Smitherman (volleyball) signed with Broward College, Ethan Shea (baseball) signed with St. Thomas University, Ashley Lizzi (lacrosse) signed with Butler and Emalee Mendoza (lacrosse) signed with Beloit College (Wisc.).
