Both of the top ranked baseball teams in Dade and Broward counties lost Friday night.

Flanagan gave USA Today’s No. 1 ranked team, Archbishop McCarthy, its first loss of the season with a 4-2 victory.

Nicholas MacDonald (6-1) struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win for the Falcons (16-4).

“It was a packed house here [Friday night], and it got pretty crazy after the game,” Flanagan coach Ray Evans said.

Flanagan was first on the board after earning its four runs in a productive third inning. The Mavericks scored their two runs in the fifth.

“It was such a team win for us [Friday night], everybody had a great game. There was big-time team effort, and the pitching was phenomenal,” Evans said.

In Miami-Dade County, Columbus picked up some major momentum heading into next week’s GMAC baseball tournament with a 2-1 upset win over South Dade.

Dominick Diaz struck out six and gave up a run in a two-hitter as the Explorers (15-7) beat the Bucs (20-2), ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today.

Matt Alfonso led Columbus’ hitters by going 2 for 3.

The Explorers will travel to play at Hialeah Gardens (13-5) Monday in the quarterfinal round of the GMAC tournament. South Dade will aim to regroup when it hosts Westland Hialeah (14-8).

Hialeah (10-10) will take on Southwest (10-12) at the Eagles’ home field, and Goleman (20-2) will travel to Coral Park (16-7).

All quarterfinal games are at 3:30 p.m. The semifinals will be played Tuesday and the final on Thursday at sites and times to be announced following the quarterfinal round.
