Doral boys head to state in tennis

From Miami Herald Staff Reports

The Doral Academy boys’ tennis team continued to make history as it heads to the state championship after defeating Mourning 5-2 in the region 8-3A final Thursday afternoon.

This season was also the first time the Firebirds (10-4) won districts.

“We had the potential to do great things if we stuck together as a team. When it came down to it, we were able to pull through when it really mattered, in both districts and regional,” third-yearcoach Justin Puppo said.

Junior Felipe Hidalgo and senior Sebastian Serrano won the first two singles for Doral.

Then, Avdyleziz Avydev won the third single for Mourning. Senior Julio Luque won the tie-breaker for the fourth single to put the Firebirds ahead for good.

“I guess you can say it’s a veteran team, but these kids have been playing with each other from a young age, and really bonded together this year. I’m very proud of them,” Puppo said. “They played so great today, you wouldn’t believe it if you saw it.”

The TERRA girls’ team is going back to the state championship this season after edging Doral Academy 4-3.

Freshman Bin Zheng defeated Sophia Adams 6-4, 6-1 to win at No. 1 singles, but the Firebirds (9-4) lost the team competition. Zheng will head to the state championship in individual play after winning No. 1 singles in district finals.

Michelle Adan-Pol and Isabel Taboada won singles to give TERRA (11-2) the lead.

After finishing singles matches with a 3-2 score, TERRA’s Adams and Adan-Pol won the first doubles match to seal the victory.
