Sommer Grzybek’s gramd slam lifts Cooper City

Sommer Grzybek had the game winning grand-slam hit to lead the Cooper City girls’ softball team to edge Western 5-4 in the first round of the BCAA Big 8 Tournament, Monday afternoon at Silver Lakes South Park.

Grzybek also went 2-3 and had 4 RBI. Jasmin Herrera picked up the win after pitching a complete game for the Cowboys (14-8).

Cooper City advances to face St. Thomas Aquinas at 6:30, Tuesday.

The MAST water polo teams swept the GMAC championships for the first time. Cara Mullery had a combined 10 goals to lead the Makos’ girls to their second consecutive GMAC championship. Kurtis Urguhart led the boys to their first since 2011 with four goals, six assists, three blocks and two assists.

Alek Manoah, South Dade, baseball: Manoah went 5 for 5 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Bucs to an 11-2 win over Palmetto and gave up one run in six innings pitched in a 4-2 win over Killian.

Emily Santos, Miami Springs, softball: Santos struck out 11 and went 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI in a 5-4 win over Goleman.
