The MAST Academy water polo program has ascended to one of Miami-Dade County’s best in recent years.

But the Makos never celebrated both a boys and girls’ GMAC championship on the same day – until Wednesday.

MAST swept both tournaments at the Miami-Dade North pool as the boys edged Mourning 12-10 and the girls beat Coral Gables 15-6.

The boys (16-0) won their first GMAC title since 2011 — snappng Columbus’ three-year run — led by Kurtis Urguhart’s four goals, six assists, three blocks and two assists. John Nieves had three goals and five assists; Miguel Hernandez had three goals, six assists and four steals.

“It’s a great honor for me to be a part of this program,” MAST boys’ coach Yuniel Usin said.

“We at MAST have great support from parents and administration and we’ve been working hard for the past few years. This year’s victory is a direct result of the degree of discipline and dedication and team spirit this team has.”

The Makos beat Palmetto in the semifinal round led by Hernandez’s four goals, three assists and four steals. Nieves had four goals, five assists and two steals. Paul Foreiter had four goals, five assists and two steals.

For the girls, it was the Makos’ second consecutive county title.

Cara Mullery led MAST’s girls (16-0), who also beat Terra 24-6 in the semifinal round earlier in the day, with a combined 10 goals. She also had seven assists and five steals in the final.

Angie Varona had five goals, four assists and two steals in the final and three goals in the semifinal round. Garo Martin had two goals and two assists in the final. Isabella Sanz and Josefina Pons each had four goals in the semifinals.

“The last two years we’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’ve been able to put together two perfect regular seasons,” MAST girls’ coach Alfredo Cancelo said. “Our goal is to repeat what we did last year winning GMAC, districts, regionals and making it back to state.”
