Gaston “Chachi” Rodriguez has a unique distinction among Miami-Dade County boys’ basketball coaches.

He’s the only coach in county history to lead two different schools to state championships.

Miami Belen Jesuit is hoping Rodriguez can some day make it a third with their basketball program.

Rodriguez was introduced as the Wolverines new coach Friday a month after longtime coach José Roca stepped down following nearly two decades coaching the program.

Roca led the Wolverines to 10 regional playoff appearances during that span and coached for 28 years overall. Roca will remain in his role as a teacher and the school’s math department chair.

“The extraordinary success that we have enjoyed over the years is more impressive when you consider that Belen is committed to raising its student-athletes throughout their years in middle school and high school,” Belen school president Father Willie García-Tuñón said in a statement. “We win with what we have and with what we coach.

“José Roca has tirelessly built a program that nurtures athletic and academic talent from the moment the boys step on to the campus in middle school. For this we will be eternally grateful to him.”

Rodriguez won state championships in 2009 at Miami Coral Reef and in 2000 at Hialeah Champagnat Catholic. He spent the past three seasons at Coral Gables where he guided the Cavaliers to a couple of regional semifinals appearances that included a district championship this past season.
