Palmetto, Miami Beach go distance to win GMAC tennis titles

Miami Beach’s boys and Palmetto’s girls each had to work overtime Thursday to secure their GMAC tennis championships.

Palmetto held off rival Krop to win its third consecutive GMAC title. After sweeping the top three singles divisions, Palmetto had to hold off the Lightning, which won the No. 4 and 5 singles and No. 1 doubles divisions.

"They never backed down even when we fell behind 6-5 in the first set of the No. 2 doubles," Palmetto coach Kelly Gibson said. "It wasn’t easy. Krop made us work for it. But it shows the toughness of this team."

Miami Beach rallied to beat Mourning after dropping three of the five singles matches.

Mourning took a 3-2 lead after the singles matches, but the teams of Quin McLeod and Nicolas Barone (No. 1 doubles) and Omar Zarif and Luca McLeod each scored clutch wins in the doubles round.
