Heritage wins its bracket in SlamFest softball tourney, St. Thomas falls short

Every season the SlamFest softball tournament hosted by Gulliver Prep serves as a midseason barometer for the top teams from across Florida to see where they measure up.

A pair of Broward County teams looking to return to winning a state championship after falling just short last season reached the final of their respective brackets on Saturday at Palmetto Bay Park.

American Heritage won the gray bracket championship with a 12-2, run-rule victory over Jensen Beach, and St. Thomas Aquinas fell 2-1 to Wellington in the blue bracket final.

Both came away pleased with where their teams stand moving forward and the two ironically enough will meet at Aquinas on Wednesday.

“We really work for the last seven games of the season, which is districts, regionals and hopefully states,” American Heritage coach Marty Cooper said. “That’s what this is all for. This is the groundwork.”

Said Aquinas coach Bryan Baucom, “I’m very happy. Our goal was to get to the championship game, which we did. We played pretty well. It’s not the end of the season. That’s why we play these games.”

The Raiders (11-3) could not muster enough offense after giving up two early runs.

Pitcher Brooke Stock did not give up a run to Wellington (13-2) after the second inning and catcher Lindsay Gehring blasted a solo home run to left in the fourth to cut the deficit in half but Aquinas did not score again.

The Raiders could have scored a potential tying run in the fifth when cleanup hitter Meagan Patterson drilled a hard chopper down the third-base line that appeared fair but was called foul.

In contrast, the Patriots (13-0) saw plenty of offense in their final, hitting around the order in two separate innings while pitcher Madison Camby shut down Jensen Beach.

Effective on the inner half of the plate and confident in her screwball, Camby gave up just two unearned runs on three hits and struck out five in a complete-game victory.

Hannah Sipos went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and the run-rule clinching RBI single. Kiauna Martin and Olivia Saviskas combined to go 7 for 7 as Heritage totaled 19 hits.

Calvary Christian won the white bracket of the tournament, which was played mostly on other sites and had its final at Palmetto Bay Park.

Tournament host Gulliver fell in the final consolation of the blue bracket to Naples Barron Collier, which was moved up from the gray into the spot Westminster Christian vacated when the Warriors left early due to a lengthy wait between consolation games as the tournament fell behind schedule.
