No. 1 Archbishop McCarthy baseball team holds off American Heritage

Early on Friday night, Archbishop McCarthy showed why it is the top-rated baseball team in the nation

Later on, the Mavericks looked mortal but clutch.

McCarthy, which has won state titles in five of the past six years and is ranked No. 1 by USA Today, held off visiting American Heritage 7-5.

The Mavericks raced to a 7-0 lead, but Heritage chipped away and scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it 7-4. With two outs and the tying run at the plate, Heritage batter Kyle Carter engaged in an epic 15-pitch at-bat against reliever Roger Garcia.

Carter won the full-count battle, lining a hard, run-scoring single to right. But McCarthy was celebrating just a couple of seconds later when Carter was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double.

Game over.

The Mavericks improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the battle with Heritage (8-2, 2-1) for first place in District 15-6A.

McCarthy grabbed an early lead. Catcher Andrew Fernandez and shortstop Kobe Lopez hit two-run doubles during a five-run second inning.

Fernandez also did an outstanding job defensively. With the bases loaded, two outs and a 2-0 count in the first inning, Fernandez picked off Alfonso Guillen at first base.

In the second inning, with Anthony Boix on third base and no out, Fernandez retrieved what would have been a wild pitch and flipped to pitcher Johnny Leone for an out at the plate, keeping Heritage off the scoreboard yet again.

Leone did his part, allowing four hits and one run in four-plus innings. But the relief pitching got shaky with Joe Perez and Garcia in the seventh.

So, is McCarthy worthy of its No. 1 ranking?

There’s no doubt the Mavericks have talent, starting with power-hitting junior first baseman Alex Toral, a Miami Hurricanes recruit and one of the top prospects in the nation.

And there is no doubt that this is a junior-dominated team that should be even better in 2017.

“I think it’s impossible to pinpoint an exact team that is No. 1 in the nation,” McCarthy coach Rich Bielski said earlier Friday. “But we are experienced, coming off a state championship last year with a young team. We are good.”

They were good enough Friday.
