Late-inning runs lift Archbishop Carroll baseball over Marathon

Host Archbishop Carroll scored three runs in the third and four in the sixth to break open a close district baseball game on Wednesday afternoon and beat Marathon 7-1.

Alex Gonzalez (4-1) pitched six innings for the Bulldogs (9-2, 5-0 in District 8-3A) and gave up a run in the sixth after Carroll had grabbed a 3-0 lead in the previous inning. Gonzalez struck out three and also walked three.

Jimmy Heyworth led the Bulldogs by driving in two runs and also scoring twice as he had a pair of doubles in four trips to the plate.

Lizandro Echemendia scored a run and was also credited with the game-winning RBI. Sal Lorenzo was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

MORE BASEBALL

▪ Miami Country Day 7, Hialeah Educational 6: Winning pitcher Jordan Sale (1-3) tossed five innings in relief and not only didn’t allow an earned run, but he drove in Connor Goodman with the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Kian Andersen drove in three runs with a two-run homer for the Spartans (5-8). Hialeah Educational fell to 2-8.

▪ Somerset 5, American Heritage 4: Brandon Valentin (2-2) and Juan Teixeira combined to go 6 2/3 innings and strike out five in the win. Luis Chavez was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Derek Cartaya scored once.

▪ Jackson 16, North Miami Beach 6: Joel Rivera was 6 for 6 with four runs scored and two RBI to lead the Generals (6-4). Also for Jackson: Hector Rodriguez (four runs), Kerlin Mateo (five RBI) and Armando Prieto (four RBI).

▪ Mourning 17, Carol City 2: The Sharks (4-6) scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to victory as Marcel Guardarrama went 2 for 3 with four RBI, Jim Varona drove in three runs and Anthony Antigua scored three runs.

SOFTBALL

▪ Goleman 19, Jackson 8: Michi Oliva tied a school record with seven RBI as the Gators (10-1) ran past Jackson on Wednesday. Oliva was 4 for 5 with a pair of triples and doubles. Also for Goleman: Nat Perez had a triple and three RBI and Kourtney Lohn had a pair of doubles, a triple and four RBI. Jackson is 6-4.
