Wrestling coaches Ryan (Miami Springs), Pelegri (Pace) to be honored

With more than 50 combined years of coaching wrestling in Miami-Dade County, it was only appropriate that Dave Ryan and Frank Pelegri got the call a few weeks ago and that both will go into the Florida Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame together.

Ryan, who is in his 33rd year as the coach at Miami Springs and Pelegri his 21st at Monsignor Pace, will be honored by the FHSAA at next weekend’s state finals in Kissimmee. They will enter in the Lifetime Service Award category and be formally inducted in a ceremony at Disney Springs Resort near Orlando on Aug. 6.

“It was quite a humbling moment for me, to say the least,” said Ryan, who coached individual state champions in 1992 (Nelson Perera) and 1996 (Clyde Griffin). “There are some really big names in that Hall of Fame, including some great coaches and referees over many years, and to have my name alongside of them is real honor.”

Since taking over in 1996, Pelegri coached the Pace wrestling team to a state title in 2000, making the Spartans the first wrestling state champions from a Miami-Dade County private school.

“I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of great kids over the years,” said Pelegri, who also coached at the University of Minnesota, Lyndonwood University and Chaminade-Madonna in Broward County. “It’s indeed an honor to be recognized for a sport I care for and am so deeply passionate about.”

Ryan and Pelegri will join three other Miami-Dade County coaches, Jim Husk (Columbus), Vic Balmeceda (South Dade) and Kenny Johnson (Southridge), who have already been inducted.

AWARDS

The 30th annual Louie Bing Athletic Scholarship Fund awards banquet will be held Friday at Florida Memorial University.

The ceremony annually honors people who have made a difference in the lives of youth in the local community. Among this year’s honorees are former Miami Norland athletic director Ira Fluitt and Booker T. Washington coach Earl Tillman.

Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased by calling 305-233-0652.
