American’s Tyrese Cooper shines at Louie Bing Invitational

Hialeah American freshman Tyrese Cooper received national attention last year as a middle schooler thanks to his record-setting times.

Cooper captured three titles at Saturday’s Louie Bing Invitational, which pits South Florida’s top high school track and field programs against each other, at Tropical Park.

“I got to keep training hard and not get too big-headed and cocky,” Cooper said of his debut.

Nationally ranked, Cooper also won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. He has been competing for four years, setting records in 2015 at the Florida Middle School State Championships.

“I thought I was going to lose,” Cooper said of his 100-meter turn. “The way I got out was horrible. I kicked up at the 60 and beat everyone out. I don't know what came over me. I just don’t like losing.”

Four other tri-county student-athletes earned multiple individual titles: Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson senior Phillip Lee Jr. (high jump, long jump); Miami Coral Reef senior Carlin Berryhill (1,600, 3,200); Miami Northwestern senior Briana Eskridge (long jump, high jump); and Northwestern junior Twanisha Terry (100, 200). Berryhill (1,600) and Terry (100, 200) are the state champions in those events.

Terry and the Bulls took Saturday’s team title with 207 points. The program has won seven consecutive state titles.

Oakland Park Northeast junior Damion Thomas, last year’s 110-meter hurdle state champion, defended his title with a time of 14.43. Northwestern sophomore Thomas Burns, the younger brother of the University of Miami’s Artie, took the 300-meter hurdle event.

Hallandale, last year’s Class 2A state champion, topped Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson for the boys’ team title with 61 points. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, last year’s fifth-place finisher at state in Class 4A, got third with 50.5 points.
