A BCAA Big 8 championship, district and regional titles — “It was a great year,” South Broward coach Richard Walker said.

But as successful as the Bulldogs were, their season ended with a loss on Friday afternoon as Winter Haven prevailed 66-53 in a Class 7A state semifinal at The Lakeland Center.

South Broward (25-6) led 18-12 in the second quarter, but Winter Haven went on a 16-0 run, and the Bulldogs never led again.

The loss snapped the Bulldogs’ 14-game win streak.

Winter Haven (28-3), which used a persistent press to force 22 turnovers, will play Bradenton’s Lakewood Ranch (25-6) for the 7A title on Saturday.

“They sped us up,” South Broward guard Mackenzie Sadaka said of the Winter Haven press.

Bulldogs guard Natalia Leaks had a game-high 20 points, driving to the hoop effectively. She made 8-of-19 shots from the floor, scoring all of her field goals in the paint.

“She did a great job for us the entire postseason,” Walker said of Leaks, who did have five turnovers.

Sadaka was another standout, especially early. She had five of her nine points in the first period and finished the game with just eight field goal attempts, making four.

Shante Walker – no relation to the coach – had an off game. She entered Friday as the Bulldogs’ leading scorer (17.2) but made just 1-of-8 through three quarters.

She finished with 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting and a game-high six turnovers.

The good news for the Bulldogs is that next season could be even better – there is only one senior on the roster.

Leaks, Sadaka and Walker should form an excellent trio once again.

“We’re going to be tough to beat next year,” Richard Walker said. “These girls are young, but they don’t play their age. They play like seniors.”
