Flanagan ousts Miami High, South Miami tops Gables in boys’ basketball regionals

The Flanagan Falcons ended the regular season 7-10 and not expected to do much.

Now, the Falcons (12-10) are only one home win away against South Miami on Friday night from earning their first trip to the state final four in boys’ basketball.

Behind 28 points from senior point guard P.J. Allen and 16 points and 15 rebounds from Dexter Jeanty, the Falcons ended Miami High’s season Tuesday night with a 71-62 overtime victory in a Class 8A regional semifinal.

The Stingarees, once thought to be a state title favorite before 7-1 All-American center Zach Brown transferred out of the program midseason, trailed by 10 points entering the fourth quarter.

But behind Marlon Sierrra (25 points, 21 rebounds) and Justin Arce (18 points), they rallied to force an extra period.

“We just kept our composure,” Allen said. “We have a destiny. We think we can do anything. We feel like we’re the best team in the state in our class. We have role players and everybody knows their job and what we need to do win.

“We’re exciting. But we know we’re not done. We’re back in the gym tomorrow. There’s more work to do.”

MIA: M. Sierra 27, J. Arce 18, S. Jean-Jaques 8, A. Mera 9. Three-pointers: Arce 4. FLA (12-10): G. Allen 28, D. Jeanty 16, S. Wingfield 14, D. Lester 6, J. German 4, E. Jean-Baptiste 2. Three-pointers: Allen 5.

▪ Region 4-8A semifinal — South Miami 64, Coral Gables 61: Junior guard Ezacuras Dawson hit the game-winning free throw with 4.4 seconds remaining in overtime as the Cobras (21-8) eliminated the host Cavaliers (20-7).

Dawson was fouled needlessly, 43 feet from the basket, but it was enough to send the Cobras to the 8A regional finals for the fourth straight year.

Miguel Arnold led South Miami with 24 points. Dawson had five of his 21 points in overtime.

Coral Gables’ Phillip Hall had a game-high 26 points.

The box office sold out its tickets in seven minutes as the packed Gables gym — capacity 450 — was the setting for a game that included 15 lead changes. Gables might have won had it not missed its final six free throws in regulation and another crucial foul shot in overtime.

Gables’ Will Blet sent the game to OT when he rebounded his own missed free throw and hit a put-back with 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
