Miami-Dade football stars best Broward again in Miami Dolphins All-Star Game

The battle for South Florida supremacy was a little closer this time around.

But thanks largely to a couple of big plays on defense and special teams by Homestead’s Jotavius Barrett, Miami-Dade County emerged victorious once again.

Barrett returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and sealed the game with an interception with less than a minute left to lift the Dade All-Stars to a 14-7 win over Broward County on Friday night in the fifth annual Miami Dolphins All-Star Game, presented by Under Armour, at Traz Powell Stadium.

Dade improved to 5-0 in the game’s all-time series. Barrett was named the game’s defensive Most Valuable Player.

“I knew they were coming at me from the beginning,” Barrett said. “At the end of the game, the coach, he taps his players on top of the head which means it’s a fade route and I just read the play from the get-go and jumped it and made the pick.”

Barrett’s interception of Flanagan quarterback Ryan Stanley came in the side of the end zone with 49 seconds left.

His spectacular punt return came in the first quarter when he caught the ball while drifting backward, turned and surged up the middle and through the coverage team to the end zone.

“Jotavius, his motor never stops,” said Dade coach and former Coral Reef coach Chevas Clements. “He never stops in practice, never comes off the field in practice and it shows when he plays, He prepares like a champion and he plays like a champion.”

Booker T. Washington quarterback Maurice Alexander earned the game’s offensive MVP. In the second quarter, Alexander added to Dade’s lead with a 15-yard touchdown run to give Dade a 14-0 edge.

The score came right after Alexander, an FIU commit, connected with fellow FIU commit Austin Maloney for a 44-yard gain.

Broward County’s lone score came with less than four minutes left in the third quarter off a blocked field goal when Sunrise Piper’s Travis Liburd picked up the loose ball and ran 60 yards for a touchdown.

All-Star game

Close to 90 standout high school football players from Miami-Dade and Broward counties will play in the TRU Sports Foundation sixth annual Public vs. Private All-Star Game at Monsignor Pace at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Top players in the game will include St. Thomas Aquinas running back Deltron Sands, American Heritage linebacker Anthony Flory and Gulliver Prep quarterback Jowan Watson for the Private team along with South Dade quarterback Patrick Coats, North Miami running back Alex Pierre and Miramar defensive lineman Bryton Dieujuste representing the Public squad.

The Public squad trails in the series 3-2 but is coming off a big 31-0 thumping of the Private team a year ago. Gulliver Prep assistant coach Raviel Maisonet will coach the Private squad while Mater Academy coach Javier Valdes will coach the Public team.

Tickets are $5 for high school students with valid ID and $10 for general admission (children under 3 are admitted free). For more information, go to infotrusportsfoundation.org.
