Ransom, MAST advance to district final in boys’ soccer
Michael Colonna, who is 6-5, needed every inch of his impressive frame to score Ransom Everglades’ first goal on Wednesday afternoon.
Or, depending on who you ask, Colonna needed another inch or two to truly have gotten his head on the ball, which was delivered to him on a long throw-in by Alex Stuart.
“I’ll plead the fifth,” Colonna joked when asked if that was his shot or an own-goal by the Edison Red Raiders. ‘[But] I’d like to think I got the back of my head on that ball.”
As it turned out, that goal was all that host Ransom needed to beat Edison in a District 15-2A boys’ soccer semifinal.
Edison went from GMAC semifinalists last week to having their season end in a 7-0 rout against Ransom. Five of the goals came in the second half.
Colonna had three goals; he was given credited for that first dubious score but then added two more that were emphatic.
Stuart finished with one goal and two assists, and goalie Antonio Ferrer earned a fairly easy shutout.
Ransom (18-4), which advanced to play MAST in Friday’s district final, also beat Edison 5-2 earlier this season. But that’s not a true indication as to the quality of the Red Raiders (14-3-2), according to Ransom coach Dave Villano.
“Edison is an excellent team,” Villano said. “This is one of the toughest districts in the state.”
Colonna, whose main sport is volleyball but also plays wide receiver, defensive end and punter in football, has 18 goals this season.
“When we get the ball wide, [Colonna] is a huge target for us,” Stuart said. “It’s easy to find him.”
▪ District 15-2A semifinal: MAST 1, Somerset 0 :Valentin Sabella’s goal in the 55th minute launched the Makos (13-1-4) to the first district final in program history.
Somerset (13-4-3) was the more active side in the first half, getting six shots on goal and seven corner kicks to only two each, respectively, for MAST.
But after Somerset had to play one man short due to a second yellow card, Sabella, a native of Argentina, took advantage. He booted in a free kick, and the Makos held on in a tightly contested and emotional match.
Ryan Hernandez got the shutout.
“They had the momentum until they lost a man,” Sabella said.
After his interview was done, Sabella turned to his teammates and shouted: “We made history!”
