Dewan Huell stood in front of a poster Tuesday that had pictures of Kevin Durant, LeBron James and James Harden, just to name a few.

Huell is getting an opportunity to do something those NBA stars all did in their high school days.

Huell, Norland’s star 6-9, 230-pound senior power forward, was formally invited to the 39th annual McDonald’s All-American game during a ceremony at the Vikings’ gym.

“It’s a blessing knowing I’m getting a chance like this,” Huell said. “It doesn’t happen very often. Looking back at this wall, it’s amazing to be in the same position those guys were in. Hopefully, in the future, I’ll be in the same place they are now.”

Huell, a University of Miami signee, will be among the 24 players chosen for the prestigious event to be held at 9 p.m. March 30 at the United Center in Chicago. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Huell, ranked No. 23 in the nation by ESPN.com, was said to be the sixth player all-time from the area to be chosen for the game.

This season, Huell is averaging 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game as he attempts to lead Norland (17-3 so far this season) to a fifth consecutive state championship, which would match a state record.

“This game fits him well,” Norland coach Lawton Williams III said. “He gets to run and jump and show off his skill. I think he can do well. For now, it’s about finishing strong and helping us win five in a row. I’m really happy for him because he worked really hard to get it.”

BASEBALL

Archbishop McCarthy first baseman Alex Toral has been selected to this year’s Under Armour All-America baseball game. Toral, a first-team All-Broward selection, hit .385 with five home runs and 31 RBI last season to help the Mavericks win their fifth state title in the past six seasons.
