MLK hoops tournament has everything covered
Star players? Check.
Perennial state powers? Got them.
Sleeper teams? Indeed.
The Tournament of Champions Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. boys’ basketball Classic tips off at the Coral Springs City Gymnasium Friday with all the boxes checked for what should be a compelling three-day Tournament.
A total of 18 games will be played Friday, Saturday and Monday with teams looking to build momentum heading into the pivotal second half of the season.
In the player to watch category, Chaminade-Madonna’s high-flying 6-4 senior Darius Allen leads the pack.
Allen, the Lions’ leading scorer, will look to add to his highlight reel of acrobatic dunks against Calusa Prep Friday at 7.
Meanwhile, surging Dillard, led by 6-5 junior Jordan Wright — who is making a serious push for Broward big school player of the year honors — faces Miami Christian on Saturday.
That contest will set the stage for Westminster Academy, fresh off its upset of SourceHoops Class 3A No. 1 Sagemont, against four-time defending state champion Miami Norland and the Miami Hurricanes’ 5-star recruit in 6-10 Dewan Huell at 7:30.
McArthur comes in with an 11-7 record, but a number of big wins against top teams cast them as a sleeper team in 7A.
The Mustangs, who face Carol City Friday at 5:30, look to star guard Nate Johnson, who averages 22 points, to set the tempo.
At the MVP Sports MLK girls’ Super Showcase, reigning Class 5A state champion Dillard faces Class 3A champ Miami Country Day in what is being billed as the game of the year in girls’ hoops.
Both national powerhouses are resuming a riveting rivalry from last year when Dillard defeated the Spartans in a nail-biting 66-62 victory at the MVP Classic only to have the Spartans return the favor by defeating Dillard 57-41 in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National High School Tournament championship game.
Dillard and Fort Lauderdale will host four games each on Friday with Dillard’s matchup against Miami Country Day on Saturday at 9 p.m. rounding out the five-game schedule at Dillard on Saturday.
