Public beats Private in All-Star football game

After suffering through a frustrating season that saw their team just miss the playoffs in brutal District 16-6A, Norland quarterback Rodrick Robinson and Vikings linebacker Emmett Rice at least finished up their high school careers in style on Saturday night.

That’s because this Norland one-two punch wound up taking home Offensive and Defensive MVP trophies, respectively as the Public All-Stars emerged with a big 26-12 victory over the Private stars in the Seventh Annual Tru Sports Foundation Public vs. Private All-Star game at McArthur High School in Hollywood.

With the Public squad clinging to a 14-12 lead and facing a third-and-9 at midfield with just over four minutes left, Robinson turned a busted play into a 51-yard touchdown run to put his team up by eight.

“The touchdown was a busted play,” said Robinson who has visits set up to Tennessee State, FAMU and Norfolk State. “Our running back (Miramar’s Jonathan Seay) went the wrong way and there I was out there by myself so I just took off trying to make a play and I managed to get the corner turned and off I went. Emmett and I both taking home the MVPs was really cool. We just came out here to have fun and represent our school and now for both of us to go home with the trophies is really something.”

Two minutes later after Robinson’s heroics, Rice sealed the deal when he jumped a slant in route and picked off Cardinal Gibbons quarterback Carmine Scarfone returning it 35 yards for a score with 2:05 left.

“I was just dropping into my coverage and read the quarterback’s eyes and jumped the route, and once I had the ball it was off to the house,” said Rice who is a solid commit to Florida State. “Rod and I, we’re just a bunch of play-makers on the field and when the ball gets in our hands, we make plays with it.”

Trailing 7-2, the Private team, which still leads the series 4-3, scored just seven seconds before halftime when Scarfone snuck over from the one yard line to grab a 9-7 lead at the break.

But the Public took the second half kickoff and marched 61 yards in seven plays, the payoff score an outstanding four yard run by Carol City running back Darnell Rolle who broke three tackles to get into the end zone giving his team a lead it would not lose.

“Things started off a little choppy at first but we were just trying to get the kids to settle in and trust what we’ve been working on the last few weeks and we definitely did that once we started huddling instead of going no-huddle,” said Public and American head coach Anthony White who coached at Norland for many years before coming over to American and has known Robinson and Rice they there were in middle school. “How bout that, my Norland kids. Even though I’m not there any more, I’ve known those two since they were little and it was great to reunite with them and then watch them help us win and show me some love tonight.”
