Eight Aquinas football players make Class 7A All-State first team
Much as it dominated the field in Class 7A this season, St. Thomas Aquinas swarmed the Class 7A All-State team released Thursday.
Eight Raiders made the first team and 14 were selected overall from the repeat 7A state champions.
Junior quarterback Jake Allen, senior offensive linemen Louie Berkowitz and Nick Plunkett, senior wide receiver Dominic Thieman and senior kicker James McCourt were chosen on the first-team offense. Junior defensive end Nik Bonitto and senior defensive tackle Colin Nace were joined by senior defensive back Frank Coppet on defense.
Three members of Flanagan’s Class 8A state championship team highlighted a group of seven first-teamers in that class from South Florida.
Senior linebackers Devin Bush Jr., Devin Gil and senior defensive back Josh Metellus each helped the Falcons win their first state title this season. Deerfield Beach had two players on first team — senior defensive back Aaron Robinson and senior punter Alfred Smith.
Two of Miami-Dade County’s top defensive stars — senior defensive ends Joshua Uche (Columbus) and Shakur Cooper (Coral Gables) — also made first team.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Sophomore Sheshlanie Laureano recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Ferguson to a 48-40 win over host Lourdes.
Lourdes had defeated the defending district champion Falcons 53-50 earlier this season, but Ferguson coach Gabriel Lazo said his team’s much-improved defense was an important factor in tying the season series.
“We have grown because of our tough schedule, our team has matured,” Lazo said. “The goal was to attack their zone defense better than the first time.”
Although a young team, Ferguson’s sophomores played a key role in the win. Laureano also had three blocks for the Falcons. Yaire Rodriguez added 10 points, and Natalia Pineda had nine points and five steals.
It was the first game back from a knee injury for Ferguson’s Gio Perez, a Stony Brook commit. She contributed nine points, eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals.
