Miami High beats Krop to reach Jr. Orange Bowl Classic boys’ basketball title game

Miami High defeated Krop 66-54 on Tuesday night to advance to the championship game of the Junior Orange Bowl Classic boys’ basketball tournament at Doral’s Ronald Reagan High.

The Stings (8-4) were led by 7-1 center Zach Brown, who had 26 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks — all game-highs. Marlon Sierra, a 6-7 forward, had 17 points, and 6-5 guard Malcolm Nicholas added 10 points, a game-high eight assists and a game-high six steals.

Miami High raced to a 43-20 halftime lead and coasted.

For Wednesday’s final, the Stings will reinstate five players, including two starters, who served a two-game suspension for leaving the bench during an on-court skirmish in a Kentucky tournament.

In the girls’ part of the tournament, two Miami schools lost in semifinal games. Playing for the title on Wednesday will be Oklahoma City’s Putnam City West against Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley. That game will tip off at 6:30 p.m.

Putnam City West beat Ferguson 58-57 on a layup at the buzzer. Fergunson was without point guard Giolibeth Perez, a senior and a Stony Brook recruit.

Perez, who sustained a knee injury two weeks ago, is questionable to return this season.

Without Perez, three sophomores stepped up on Tuesday: shooting guard Natalia Pineda, who had 23 points after scoring 26 in Monday’s quarterfinal game; small forward Sheslanie Laureano (18 points); and point guard Yaire Rodriguez (13 points).

But despite those good performances, Ferguson missed five free throws in the final 20 seconds.

“We have a really young team — we start four sophomores and one freshman,” said Ferguson coach Gabriel Lazo, whose team fell to 11-5. “Putnam has one kid who is going to play at Oklahoma State and another one who signed with Tulsa.”

Ferguson, which has been knocked out of the playoffs the past couple of years, will now play the Stings for third place instead of for the title.

Miami High lost 38-35 to Cumberland. But Stings guard Alondro Angulo had 16 points, matching the high-game output of Cumberland’s Kelly Jekot, a Villanova recruit.

Stings coach Sam Baumgarten said that — because of foul trouble for his five starters — he was forced to hold the ball for the final four minutes of the second quarter.

Only six points were scored in that period — four of them by Cumberland.

Still, Miami High (13-3) carried a three-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Cumberland won the game at the foul line, going 18 for 22 while Miami High shot just 13 of 20.

This is the Stings’ first season since the graduation of 6-4 All-American Beatrice Mompremier, who is now playing college ball for No. 4 Baylor.

Without her, the Stings are going small — their post players are 5-9 and 5-10.

“There are a lot of mistakes that we made in previous years that Bea would clean up,” Baumgarten said. “Now we get exposed if we make those mistakes.

“But we are really intense. The kids overachieve. We struggle scoring at times. We score off our defense. If we are not getting turnovers, we struggle.”
