Hallandale football coach Dameon Jones steps down

Following the most successful run in the program’s history, Hallandale football coach Dameon Jones announced Monday he was retiring from coaching.

Jones led Hallandale to five playoff appearances in his seven combined seasons over two coaching stints at his alma mater.

Over the past two seasons, he guided the Chargers to a 21-4 record and appearances in the Class 6A regional semifinals in 2014 and 5A regional finals in 2015 each time losing to the eventual state champion.

Jones took over the program in 2007 and coached three seasons before stepping aside for a year and returning in 2011. He led the Chargers to five of its six-ever playoff victories.

This past season, Jones led Hallandale to a second-round upset over two-time state champion Plantation American Heritage before losing in the next round to Orlando Bishop Moore.

In 2014, Jones’ Chargers went 11-0 before losing to five-time state champion Miami Central in the second round.

This past season, Hallandale was one of the potent offensive teams in the state led by quarterback Tyler Huntley, a Utah commit that passed for 3,636 yards and 42 touchdowns. The Chargers averaged 34.5 points per game.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Miami High’s reward for a 66-51 win over a Slovenian team on Monday was a trip to Tuesday’s Junior Orange Bowl Classic girls’ basketball semifinals against Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley.

The Gimnaziaja Benzigrad Dragons, the team Miami High beat at Reagan High, got a super consolation prize – free tickets to Monday’s Heat-Brooklyn Nets game at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Heat guards Goran Dragic and Beno Udrih – both natives of Slovenia – invited the Dragons to Monday’s game.

The Dragons were probably dealing with jet lag after arriving at their Miami hotel at 11 p.m. on Saturday night – they had a 13-hour flight from Croatia and needed four hours to clear customs, grab rental cars and make it to their destination.

After all that and just one day to recover, they were no match for the Stings (13-2), who were led by 5-7 senior guard Alondra Angulo, who had 20 points, and 5-10 senior forward Philneka Jackson, who grabbed 14 rebounds. Two senior guards – Jeri Richard and Armani Paschal – had five steals each for the Stings.

In the boys’ half of the tournament, Miami High survived without five players – including starters Kevin Reyes and Justin Arce – who served the first of a two-game suspension.

Miami High beat Zion Lutheran 76-62 as 7-1 center Zach Brown had 37 points, 20 rebounds and nine blocks. Marlon Sierra, a 6-7 forward, had 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Stings will play Krop in Tuesday’s semifinals. After that game, the Stings will get back Reyes, Arce, Dominck Garcia. Travon Shannon and Gabriel Francisco.

Miami High coach Javorie Wilson said it is an FHSAA rule that if you leave the bench during an on-court skirmish – which is what the five aforementioned Stings players did in a recent tournament in Kentucky – it’s an automatic two-game suspension.
