The Rock School downs Calusa Prep in A-Rod final

Calusa Prep was unable to capitalize on its home-court advantage as the hometown Colts fell to Gainesville’s The Rock School Lions 100-51 in the A-Rod Basketball Classic championship game.

“We played close to our potential [Saturday night],” The Rock School coach Justin Harden said. “We rebounded, we passed, and we defended hard.”

The Rock School dominated on both ends of the court. The Colts played an aggressive press defense from the opening tip that led to multiple fast-break opportunities.

The Lions were led by tournament MVP Darius Day, who scored 18 points.

“We work hard and prepare hard for every game. I don’t take any opponent easy” Day said.

Day’s signature play came early in the first quarter. After escaping his defender off a screen, he caught a pass to finish a highlight layup.

Calusa Prep was unable to advantage of the fact that the Lions were undermanned and only had seven players active for the game.

“We are used to playing undermanned. Hopefully, we can get everyone healthy soon,” Harden said.

Calusa Prep’s Nathanael Jack was the Colts’ lone bright spot.

Jack had seven three-pointers before the half and led the team with 21 points.

The Rock School had an impressive run throughout the tournament, including defeating tournament host Columbus 80-37 in the semifinals.
