Kato Nelson threw three touchdown passes and a staunch defense picked off two passes as the Flanagan football team (12-2) exacted revenge on Miami Christopher Columbus with a 30-17 victory in the Class 8A state semifinals to earn its first trip to the state finals.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
K.K. Pawelczyk, Cardinal Gibbons, girls’ soccer: Pawelczyk scored two goals to lead the Chiefs (10-1) over University School 4-2.
Jamal Ellick, Calvary Christian, boys’ basketball: Ellick had a game-high 22 points to lead the Eagles over Chaminade 67-62.
Jake Allen, St. Thomas Aquinas, football: Allen threw two touchdown passes as the eight time state champion Raiders (13-1) bounced back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Bradenton Braden River 27-10 in the Class 7A state semifinals.
Jordan Wright, Dillard, boys’ basketball: The Dillard star forward had a game-high 30 points in a 65-52 victory over Pines Charter.
Tyler Polley, Sagemont, boys’ basketball: Polley had 20 points and eight rebounds in a 58-57 victory over Blanche Ely in the Kreul Showcase.
Colby Singletary, Somerset, wrestling: Singletary earned outstanding lightweight (eight 1st period pins) and helped Somerset win the Somerset Duals title.
Sydney Drummings and Emily Eachus, South Plantation, girls’ soccer: Drummings and Eachus each scored for the Paladins in a 2-1 victory over Piper.
Alejandro Osorio, Hollywood Hills, boys’ soccer: Osorio had two goals to lead the Spartans over Nova 3-2.
Hayley Murphy, Douglas, girls’ basketball: Murphy had a game-high 18 points to lead the Eagles over Piper 56-48.
