TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Booker T. Washington football team became the first Miami-Dade County team to win four consecutive state championships and third statewide with a 43-23 comeback win over Jacksonville Raines. The Tornadoes defense stopped Raines seven times in the red zone and four times inside the 10-yard line. Marquis Decius returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown, setting a state record, and forced a fumble that Myron Morris returned 81 yards for a score. Branden Tobar also returned a fumble 59 yards for a touchdown.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Kahmanie Carter, Central, football: Carter caught seven passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns to help the Rockets beat Naples 41-21 to advance to the Class 6A final for a county-record sixth consecutive season.
Chris Mejia, Mater Academy, boys’ basketball: Mejia scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Lions to a 64-58 win over Zion Lutheran at the Kreul Showcase.
Lori Cuoto, Lourdes, girls’ basketball: Cuoto scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bobcats to a 53-50 win over district rival Ferguson.
Marcel Fayen, St. Brendan, boys’ soccer: Fayen scored all three goals to lead the Sabres to a 3-1 win over Keys Gate.
Sofia Aviles, TERRA, girls’ soccer: Aviles scored the lone goal for a 1-0 win over Doral Academy.
Victor Salazar, Goleman, wrestling: Salazar scored a pin in 1:05 to help the Gators to a win over Norland.
