SIGNINGS

▪ Columbus’ baseball team, the reigning Class 8A state champions, held a ceremony Tuesday for five of its returning seniors who signed with colleges.

A pair of right-handed pitchers, Andy Arguelles and Jose Machado, signed with FIU. The two are expected to spearhead a younger Explorers’ pitching staff this season that graduated four Division-I starters.

Outfielder Hernen Sardinas signed with Maine, first baseman Danny Bello signed with Fairleigh Dickinson and shortstop Mike Navarette signed with Santa Fe Community College. All three figure to be key components in a tough lineup for Columbus this upcoming season.

▪ West Broward had three athletes sign with colleges this week. Baseball standout Steven Revilla signed with Florida Atlantic. For lacrosse, Juliette Cusano signed with Tusculum College and Lauren O'Connell signed with St. Leo University.

▪  The high school baseball season may still be three months away but that didn't keep Miami Springs pitcher Dillon Carter from locking up a scholarship early.

Springs High School held a signing ceremony in the school's media center on Tuesday morning as Carter signed up to spend the next four years pitching for Barry University. As a sophomore in 2014, Carter helped lead the Hawks to their first district title in seven years and berth in the regional semifinals.
