Collins’ heroics lead South to win in BCAA All-Star classic

In a game dominated by a combination of great defense and offensive futility by both sides for the first three quarters, it wound up being a great offensive effort by Dillard quarterback Jason Collins that proved to be the difference on Thursday night as the South All-Stars edged the North squad 10-7 in the 18th Annual BCAA All-Star Classic at Nova High School in Davie.

With his team down 7-3, Collins, who played the first quarter and never saw the field again until the fourth, came through when it counted most as he led his team on an 11-play, 75-yard drive and snuck over from a yard out with 3:06 left in the game to give his team the win.

It was the play before Collins’ plunge that had the crowd buzzing, though.

After a high snap over his head from the shotgun had turned a first-and-goal at the 3 into a second-and-goal all the way out at the 31, Collins was cornered and about to get sacked for another big loss when somehow he dodged three defenders and broke out to his right, finding Western tight end Griffin Norberg wide open at the 15. Norberg bulled his way down to the 1, completing the 30-yard play and setting up Collins’ sneak.

It was no shock when the Otis Gray MVP award was announced after the game and Collins, who finished 8 of 11 for 101 yards with 14 yards on six carries rushing, was the recipient.

“We made a few mistakes tonight but when we needed to get down the field and get it done, we got down the field and got it done,” said Collins. “It was frustrating after that high snap, but I told them it’s only second down and that we could still find a way to get in the end zone. On the pass, I just found a lane, dodged a couple of guys and saw Griffin wide open and got him the ball.”

“I’ll tell you what, his ability to stay alive using his feet is what kept that last drive alive and ultimately saved us,” said Cooper City head coach Brandon Walker, who headed the South team. “We broke down in protection, they put some heat on us, but Jason being so savvy back there and keeping his eyes focused downfield, it was just really something to watch.”

After three quarters of scoreless play, the South grabbed a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard Josh Lovins field goal with 10:42 left. But the North’s Antonio Cartahaha from Deerfield Beach responded with an 81-yard kickoff return to the South 9. Four plays later, Monarch quarterback Michael Harris snuck over from a yard out to put the North up 7-3 with 7:56 left.

Norberg was named the Outstanding Offensive Player for the South, and Stranahan cornerback Valentino Jean, who had an interception, garnered Outstanding Defensive Player honors for the South.

Cartagaha and Blanche Ely defensive end Taiyon Devers were named the Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Players for the North, respectively.
