Cypress Bay swimming wins region

Cypress Bay swept the team championships of the Region 4-4A swimming and diving meet Friday afternoon at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus pool.

Led by Emiliana Perez and Andrea Van Den Berg’s victories, the Lightning cruised to the title with 481 points. Van Den Berg won the 200 and 500 freestyle events and Perez took home the 50 and 100-yard freestyle championships.

Coral Reef was the runner-up with 282 points, led by Lindsay Manganiello (100 backstroke champion) and Cecile Monnier (diving champion).

Marco Guarente led Cypress Bay on the boys’ side with wins in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke as the Lightning finished with 393 points. Ferguson, led by 200 freestyle champ Joseph Cardozo, placed second with 213 points.

Cypress Bay swept the sprint relays on both sides. Cooper City won the girls’ 200 medley relay and Miami Beach took home the boys’ title in that event. Kathleen Golding led the Cowboys by winning the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Hialeah Gardens’ Jessica Rodriguez won the 100 breaststroke.

On the boys’ side, Krop’s Che Davis was a double-winner, securing championships in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

FOOTBALL

▪ Piper 34, Cooper City 7: Dayvon Medina scored three touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return, as Piper (9-1) pulled away as the Bengals head to the postseason. Medina, a senior wide receiver, also scored on catches of 18 and 16 yards. Cooper City, which lost its chance at the playoffs last week, ends 4-6.

▪ University School 49, West Broward 14: The Sharks ran out to a 35-7 halftime lead thanks to a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Henry Colombi who ended with 363 yards and four scores. DJ Ingleton, Al Blades and Ken McIntosh also scored for the Sharks (8-2).

▪ U.S. Army Bowl: Coconut Creek’s trio of All-Americans – receiver Binjimen Victor and defensive backs Trayvon Mullen and Malek Young – received official invitations to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The game is scheduled for Jan. 9 at the Alamodome in San Antonio and be televised by NBC.
