Cypress Bay girls’ golf team finishes fourth at state

The Cypress Bay girls’ golf team didn’t win the state Class 3A golf championship Wednesday at the Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-in-the-Hills, but it put on about as good a performance as a team could.

The Lightning improved on its Tuesday first-round score by 17 strokes to finish at 320-303 — 623 to capture fourth place.

“I’m very proud of these girls,” Cypress Bay coach Todd Nelson said. “All of them.”

Cypress Bay tied first-place finisher Lake Mary for the lowest round on Wednesday at 303.

Leading Cypress Bay was Gabriela Ferre, who trimmed 10 shots off her first-day total on the Las Colinas course to finish at 79-69 — 148 and in fifth place in the individual standings. Teammate Brianna Buckley shot 78-77 for a 155 total and tied for 25th.

Despite Ferre’s strong effort, she was not the highest-finishing Broward girl. That honor went to Amanda Leslie of Parkland Douglas, who shot 71-74 — 145 to finish third.

Leading the Miami-Dade contingent in girls was Daniela Spillert of Lourdes Academy, who totaled 77-73 — 150 and tied for seventh. Alexa Rivas of Palmetto tied for 28th at 80-77 — 157. Both Spillert and Rivas were competing as individual qualifers.

In the boys’ competition, Columbus (12th) and Cypress Bay (16th) were the top Dade-Broward teams.

Columbus was led by a consistent and steady effort on the El Campeon course from a foursome of Rafael Martinez (78-80 — 158), Sharif Amastha (79-81 — 160), Robert Nieves (79-85—164) and Jake Moscoso (85-83-168).

The top male finisher from Dade and Broward counties was South Dade’s Cole Castro, who shot rounds of 75 and 79 for a 154 total and finished 21st.

The Lake Mary boys finished in first place to give the school a sweep of the team titles.

FOOTBALL

▪ Palmetto 28, Ferguson 20: Palmetto nearly squandered a 22-point second-half lead but held on for a win against Ferguson at Tropical Park in the season finale for both teams.

The Panthers (5-5) took a 28-6 advantage with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter when senior Sherron Jackson scored his second touchdown from 2 yards out. He finished with game highs in carries (16) and yards (154).

The Falcons (0-10) responded with a pair of fourth-quarter 2-yard rushing scores from senior Anthony Moscoso and junior Cristian Martinez to pull within a touchdown and two-point conversion.

After Ferguson failed to recover the onside kick with 56.8 left, Jackson raced 47 yards on the next play, but fumbled at the 1-yard line. The Falcons, however, were unable to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs to cement Palmetto’s win.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

▪ Region 4-7A final: St. Thomas Aquinas d. Mourning 25-8, 25-11, 25-17 — Less than 24 hours after they watched its coach become the latest inductee to go in the Broward County High School Athletics Hall of Fame, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls gave longtime coach Lisa Zielinski another gift with a straight-sets win over visiting Mourning (17-6).

The win vaults the nationally ranked and defending state champion Raiders (29-2) into their fifth consecutive state final four.

But with the state having altered this year’s format with only championship games being played at a neutral site, Aquinas will travel to the west coast on Saturday to take on Venice in a 7A state semifinal with the winner advancing to the title game at the University of Central Florida in Orlando on Nov. 14. The two teams met on Oct. 7 in Venice, and St. Thomas won in straight sets.

Mourning, making its first-ever appearance in a regional final, finished 17-6 and was led by freshman Milana Datieva with four kills and one ace.
