Fort Lauderdale High School sweeps swimming, diving titles

Fort Lauderdale’s swimming and diving teams scored a big victory heading into next week’s Class 3A state championships.

The Flying L’s boys and girls swept the Region 4-3A championships Wednesday afternoon at the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex.

Senior Raphael Marcoux won championships in the 50- and 100-freestyle events, edging his brother, Philippe, in both events. The two later teamed up to help Fort Lauderdale win the 200-free and 400-free relays. Also for the Flying L’s, Tyler Zuyus won the 100 backstroke.

On the girls’ side, senior Fatimah Westbrook led Fort Lauderdale by winning the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. The Flying L’s won the 200-medley and 200-free relays as well. Morgan Meadows won the 200 free and finished second in the 100 free.

Doral Academy finished as the team runner-up in both the boys’ and girls’ meets. Doral won the girls’ 400-free relay.

Other girls’ multiple event winners included Pembroke Pines Charter’s Kelley Heron, who won the 200-individual medley and the 100 backstroke.

Belen Jesuit, which finished third as a team on the boys’ side, was led by Aitor Fungairino’s victories in the 200 free and 500 free. Mater Academy’s Julio Horrego won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.
