Cypress Bay girls fifth after first round of Class 3A state golf tournament

The two-day state Class 3A high school golf tournament teed off Tuesday at Howey-in-the Hills and the Cypress Bay girls of Weston in Broward County were the top-ranked team from Miami-Dade or Broward county after the first round, placing themselves in a tie for fifth.

“Winning the title seems a little out of reach,” said Cypress Bay coach Todd Nelson, referring to a 21-shot lead held by first-place Lake Mary. “But we have a shot at second and that’s what we’re going to go after.”

To prove they are serious about making a run higher up the standings, Nelson said, “I’m out on the putting green right now and they are still working at it. I’m excited about what we can accomplish Wednesday.”

As he spoke and his girls were practicing, darkness was descending on the tournament site, Mission Inn, and its two courses — Las Colinas for the girls and El Campeon for the boys.

The highest finisher for the Cypress Bay girls was Brianna Buckley with a 6-over-par 78.

Amanda Leslie of Parkland Douglas was in third place in the individual standings with a 71.

In the boys’ competition, Columbus High of Miami-Dade was in ninth place with Rafael Martinez leading the Explorers with a 78.

Cole Castro — who qualified as an individual rather than with a team — was the highest-ranked Miami-Dade-Broward boy with a 3-over 75, tying him for seventh.
