Ferguson girls beat West Broward in Region 4-8A volleyball final

Having traveled to West Broward High School two years ago for a regional final and clinching their first trip to the state final four, the Ferguson volleyball team was hoping history would repeat itself Tuesday night.

And that’s exactly what happened as the Falcons rolled to a 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 straight set victory over the host Bobcats in a Region 4-8A final.

With the state having altered this year’s format with only championship games being played at a neutral site, Ferguson (28-2) is in the state semifinals but will travel north to play Jupiter in its gym on Saturday at 2 p.m. Jupiter rolled to a straight set win over Cypress Bay in its regional final.

“We had one word emblazoned across our T-shirts this year — FINISH,” said Ferguson coach Greg Shanower. “We needed to finish what we started and didn’t finish it last year. We made it to state two years ago and then got upset by Coral Reef on our way to getting back. We set six goals at the beginning of the year and now we’ve gotten five of them.”

The last, of course, is a state title that eluded them in 2013.

If there was a turning point, it came in the second set when the Falcons, after cruising to an easy win in the first set, squandered a 16-12 lead and trailed 20-17. But they recovered and went on an 8-2 run to close out the set. They then went on a 10-0 run to break away from a 5-5 tie in the third and cruised home for the win.

“We’re all super excited and came out with a lot of energy and playing together tonight,” said senior captain Natalie Hoyos, who led the way for her team with six kills, 10 assists and one service ace. “Last year we lost to Coral Reef, so we didn’t want something like that to happen to us again. It was all about coming together for the seniors and for the whole team to get this.”

Said Shanower, “It’s kind of disheartening not going to a true final four. It’s something the girls look forward to, walking into a big arena for a big venue event and I actually haven’t even told them all year about the venue change. I didn’t want them to know because it was like, why tell them because it’s like finding out from your parents there’s no Santa Claus. I’ll tell them [Wednesday] morning.”

It was the third consecutive regional final loss for West Broward which finished 17-7. Samanta Arenas led the way for the Bobcats with 12 kills, 11 digs and five service points.
