Booker T., Miami Central, Aquinas possible series teams

State championship football contenders Miami Booker T. Washington, Miami Central and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas are among the schools rumored in recent weeks to be potential contestants in the inaugural Burger King State Champions Bowl Series.

The event will pit some of the nation’s best teams in a bowl game-style tripleheader Dec.27 beginning at noon at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton.

In recent months, the Florida High School Athletic Association gave the approval for its member schools to be eligible for participation in the event.

Booker T. Washington (13-0), last year’s consensus national champion which plays Jacksonville Bolles on Saturday night in the Class 4A state championship game, is ranked No. 4 nationally and could be one of the teams picked should the Tornadoes win their third consecutive state crown and 40th consecutive game.

Central (12-1), which plays Daytona Beach Mainland (13-0) on Friday night in a Class 6A state semifinal matchup of fellow nationally ranked teams, is also vying for its third consecutive state title.

St. Thomas Aquinas (12-1), a two-time national champion, is two wins away from claiming its eighth state championship. Pembroke Pines Flanagan (13-0), Plantation American Heritage (10-3) and Miami Columbus (12-1) are the other three remaining South Florida teams in the playoffs.
