Sunset edges Mater Academy for district title

Tarik Peters stole touchdowns like Sunset stole District 16-7A, with a 24-16 victory over Mater Academy on Friday at Monsignor Pace.

Peters picked off Mater in the end zone in the first half and also caught a 42-yard touchdown pass in the victory. The Knights (8-1, 8-0) gave Mater (8-1, 7-1) its first loss and have now won eight consecutive games.

“We were very subtle [Friday night],” Peters said. “They came out hyped. Our coach taught us not to be that way … to stay humble, and it worked to our favor.”

A Mater field goal was the first score of the game, but Sunset took a first-quarter lead on a Javier Zuinga run. Mater scored twice in the second quarter, but Sunset’s Christian Diez drilled a 42-yard field goal to give the Knights a 17-16 halftime edge.

“It meant my life,” said Knights quarterback Michael Cox, who threw two scores. “I put a lot of work into this. My offensive line is the reason we win games. I have amazing running backs, amazing receivers and myself.”

The Knights were 2-8 last season, but now host the Nov. 13 regional quarterfinal. The Lions begin regionals Nov. 13 at a site to be determined.

MORE FOOTBALL

Palmer Trinity proved why it’s the No. 1 seed in the FIFC playoffs by beating Highlands Christian 53-8.

The Falcons were led by Blake Miller, who set a school record with 241 yards rushing, and Dylan DiBello, who threw four touchdown passes.

The defense, led by Kyon White Royal, recorded five sacks. Palmer Trinity plays visiting Hillel Community School in the FIFC Championship on Thursday.

▪ Cypress Bay 37, Everglades 24: Anthony Courcelle scored to help lead the offense. Darrell Malone keyed the defense, which record a safety to give the Lightning a 16-10 advantage in the second quarter.

▪ Late Thursday: LaSalle 40, Miami Country Day 13: Draquan Jones gained 315 yards on 22 carries with four touchdowns as the Royal Lions (5-5) defeated the visiting Spartans (6-5) in an SFC postseason game.

STATE GOLF

The Plantation American Heritage girls are right where they want to be at the Class 2A state golf tournament in Howey-In-The-Hills. The Heritage boys, not so much so.

After the first day of the two-day event, Heritage’s girls held a 10-stroke advantage over second-place and fellow Broward school Archbishop McCarthy as they head into Saturday’s final round.

But the Heritage boys have a big move to make if they want to repeat as state champions. The Patriots, despite Ty Strafaci tying for the individual first-day lead with an even-par 72, trail Ponte Vedra by 13 strokes.

Heritage girls’ coach Linda Sibio liked being in the lead but also preached caution.

“With five girls playing on each team, that can be wiped out in two holes,” she said. “We have to go out Saturday like it’s even. We’re happy right now, but when you really want to be happy is at the end of Day Two.”

The Heritage girls, playing on the Las Colinas course, were led by two of the youngest players in the tournament — Casey Weidenfeld, a seventh-grader, and Jillian Bourdage, an eighth-grader. Weidenfeld shot an even-par 72 and is one stroke off the individual lead, and Bourdage fired a 74 and is tied for fourth.
