Rogers takes 4-4A regional
North Miami’s Daesha Rogers has scored many impressive wins during her high school career.
Her victory Thursday afternoon ranks among the best.
Rogers won her first regional title in Class 4A by dominating the field at Larry and Penny Thompson Park and winning the Region 4-4A individual title with a time of 19:26.68.
Rogers’ time was more than 26 seconds better than St. Thomas Aquinas’ Alexa Cruz’s 19:52.75, which was enough to place second in the girls’ race. Ferguson continued to dominate as a team as it captured the girls’ championship with an impressive score of 44 to edge rival Lourdes by seven points. Aquinas finished third.
On the boys’ side, Aquinas showed its prowess by winning the team title with 39 points. The Raiders finished clear ahead of Ferguson’s 80, which topped third-place Coral Reef’s 85.
Carol Berryhill continued his dominant season for the Barracudas as he won the boys’ title with a time of 16:31.39.

REGION 4-2A; 4-1A CROSS-COUNTRY
Ransom Everglades’ Gabriel Correa stayed with the pack until he eyed the final 200 meters of the region 4-2A championship at Mills Pond Park. With his reserve energy, Correa kicked into gear, passing Lincoln Park’s Caleb Pottorff at the finish line.
“I was trying to keep in contact with the pack,” Correa said. “I was pretty confident with my kick, I had no idea I could win. I thought I had lost it like 2 miles in because they had gotten so far up. But I guess I got lucky this week.”
Pine Crest’s Alyssa Pujals won the girls’ 4-2A race.
“The course was really challenging because of the climate,” Pujals said. “It was really hot and challenged me.”
Pine Crest’s boys and girls had the best team scores in 4-2A. Westminster Academy’s boys won 4-1A, while Westminster Christian’s girls claimed 4-1A. The Westminster Christian girls have won four consecutive regional titles. Eleven of the top 15 4-1A girls are in middle school.

STATE GOLF
The Class 2A state golf tournament tees off Friday in Howey-in-the-Hills and the distinct possibility of a boys and girls’ sweep by American Heritage exists. In fact, it might be fair to say Heritage is not only seeking a double this year but has a quadruple in its sights since the Patriots swept the boys and girls’ championships a year ago.
Miami-Dade will not be represented at state in either boys or girls as no players qualified.
