St. Thomas Aquinas, Miami Country Day sweep boys’ and girls’ district cross-country titles

St. Thomas Aquinas swept the District 13-4A cross-country team titles Wednesday at Heritage Park. Pierce Statham (16:15.31) won the boys’ title, and Alexa Cruz (17:54.73) won the girls’.

In District 15-1A, Miami Country Day swept the team titles at Greynolds Park. Divine Savior’s Guilherme Pereira ran 16:50.35 to win the boys’ individual title, and Miami Country Day’s Kitty Simmonds won the girls’ crown in 21:16.68.

In District 16-3A, led by Josh Collins (16:23.24), the Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won its 12th consecutive district championship. The Wolverines took the top five spots to total a perfect score (15 points) at Larry & Penny Thompson Park. They also had the sixth and ninth fastest runners, but only the top five score.

Northwestern’s girls won, edging Mater Academy, which placed the top two individuals with Rahyah Andressohn (19:03.65) and Jinah Mickens (20:30.99).

On Tuesday, Cooper City’s girls and Cypress Bay’s boys won District 14-4A titles. Aimee Becker of Cooper City won the girls’ individual title in 21:28.13, and Jose Penalver, also of Cooper City, was first in the boys’ race in 16:56.54. Thomas Morin (16:58, second) led the team champion Lightning.

Scheck Hillel won the Jewish Soccer Classic with a 2-0 victory over Yeshiva. With three minutes left in the first half, Vanessa Gonik’s shot hit the post, but Alexandra Gelman scored on the rebound. In the second half, Sandra Feld assisted Gonik’s insurance goal.

Boys’ soccer

Palmer Trinity School senior Andres Castaneda will be finishing his senior year in Spain where he will be playing first division professional soccer for Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, S.A.D.

Originally from Colombia, he was on Palmer Trinity’s soccer team, where he has been a student since sixth grade, and also played club soccer with Real Miami F.C.

Football

Miami Killian sophomore receiver Daquris Wiggins orally committed to UM on Wednesday after initially receiving a scholarship offer in the spring.

The 6-3 target becomes Miami’s sixth commitment in the class of 2018 and joins junior running back and teammate Bentavious Thompson as Cougars committed to the Canes.
