Gulliver wide receiver and UM commitment Dionte Mullins was presented with his Under Armour All-America jersey on Tuesday at Gulliver in front of coaches, teammates, family and media.

Mullins will be playing in the same game as more than 90 other top Class of 2016 prospects nationwide in the Jan. 2 exhibition played in Orlando and televised on ESPN2.

Mullins accepted the jersey and was overwhelmed with emotion shortly after stepping to the podium. He stopped his speech short to cry on his brother’s shoulder and take a group hug with family and teammate Cedrick Wright, a fellow UM commit, before regathering himself behind the Under Armour backdrop.

“I always wanted to be a part of this game, and now I have a chance,” Mullins said. “I’m going to be out on the field and do what I do best.

“My goal is to score three touchdowns in that game, 100-something yards. I just feel bad for whoever’s covering me.”

Notable alumni of the all-star game, which will go into its ninth year, include eight first-round draft picks from the past NFL Draft, LSU running back and Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette and NFL star wide receivers Julio Jones and A.J. Green.

“We’re excited about the opportunity that Dionte has,” Gulliver coach Earl Sims said. “We celebrate with him, and we’re definitely going to be watching him and supporting him in this Under Armour All-America Game.”

Now the hope around the Raiders is that the All-America Game won’t be Mullins’ next game. Mullins is yet to play this season because of academic ineligibility, but the Raiders are hopeful he can still make a return.

Melissa Sullivan, principal of Gulliver’s Miller Drive campus, said Tuesday, “[Mullins] is working toward getting his [grade-point average] where it needs to be, and we have the resources in place to help him get there.”

Mullins first dipped below the necessary GPA threshold after football season his junior year but has been pushing it back up since, according to two sources. Sullivan says the next boost in GPA can come in two weeks when semester grades come in.

If Mullins were to return in two weeks, he would be back for a trip to Delray American Heritage on Oct. 30, but more importantly, a potential playoff run for the Raiders (3-3, 3-0 District 8-4A).
