Last week’s best Miami-Dade performances


The Gulliver boys’ and girls’ swimming teams swept the team titles at the Ransom Invitational. The Raiders set meet records in the girls’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and boys’ 400 free relay. Miguel Cancel set meet records in the 200 free and 100 butterfly, Kelly Fertel set meet records in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Niki Urquidi set a record in the 500 free and Emily Cordovi in the 100 backstroke.


Amani Peoples, Northwestern, football: Peoples had two key sacks to help the Bulls rally to beat Booker T. Washington 23-17.

Christian Matos, Westminster Christian, football: Matos completed 13 of 19 passes for 179 yards and threw four touchdown passes to help the Warriors beat Chaminade 28-18 and secure the District 8-3A title for the third consecutive season.

Michelle Cuervo, Ferguson, volleyball: Cuervo was named tournament MVP this weekend while leading the Falcons to the championship of the Florida Christian Invitational.

Lauren Amat, Westwood Christian, volleyball: Amat recorded 12 aces, six kills, six digs and 49 assists while leading the Warriors to wins over Colonial Christian, Islands Christian and Greater Miami Academy.

Joshua Collins, Belen Jesuit, boys’ cross-country: Collins ran a time of 15:59.46 to win the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational race.

Natalie Varela, Gulliver, girls’ cross-country: Varela ran a time of 19:06.13 to finish a Dade-best second at the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational race.

Julius Petzold, Miami Beach, boys’ swimming and diving: Petzold won the 50 freestyle and helped the Hi-Tides on relays to win the GMAC team championship.

Julia and Julianna Talamo, TERRA, girls’ swimming and diving: The Talamo sisters combined to win five events and help the Wolves win their first GMAC championship.

Rafa Martinez, Columbus, boys’ golf: Martinez shot a 4-under-par 68 to win the GMAC championship and lead the Explorers to the team title.

Abigail Chai-Onn, Coral Reef, girls’ golf: Chai-Onn won the GMAC championship with a 5-over 77 and led the Barracudas to the team title.

Mathew Monjarrez, Coral Gables, boys’ bowling: Monjarrez bowled a 775 to lead the Cavaliers to victory over Columbus.

Patricia Velasco, Braddock, girls’ bowling: Velasco bowled a 511 high series to lead the Bulldogs to a win over Coral Reef.
