Fort Lauderdale’s Raphael Marcoux has record-setting performance in BCAA swim meet

Six records fell on Saturday night at the BCAA swimming and diving championship at Plantation Aquatic Complex.

Fort Lauderdale senior Raphael Marcoux led the way by capturing four events, setting a top time in three of them. Though he fell .01 of a second short of the 50-yard freestyle record, he rebounded in the 100-yard freestyle (45.78), 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.84) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.02).

Marcoux, who committed to Harvard, has been swimming since he was 8 and spends nearly 14 hours in the pool each week. He has won 10 BCAA titles during his high school career. His brother, Philippe, had the best mark (52.74) in the 100-yard backstroke on Saturday.

“It was a great meet overall,” Marcoux said. “I’m happy about my 100. I was surprised. I had Philippe next to me. I knew I couldn’t just slack off because he was right up there. It was a great race and I had fun. BCAAs are always fun. These past three years have been great. It’s a great way to end senior year with BCAAs.”

Cypress Bay took the team title for the second consecutive year as senior Marco Guarente set records in the 200-yard IM (1:52.75) and 100-yard breaststroke (56.57). The Lightning finished 23rd at state in 2014 and hopes to improve upon that experience.

“Last year I was out of the country in Venezuela with family problems, so I missed states,” said Guarente, who swims for the national team. “This year is my comeback. I’m expecting to train hard to win.”

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls notched another BCAA team title despite taking just two events, including the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.88). The Raiders placed ninth at state last year.

Cypress Bay’s Andrea Van Den Berg (500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle) and Fort Lauderdale’s Fatimah Westbrook each won twice (100-yard breaststroke, 50-yard freestyle).

Cooper City freshman Kathleen Golding, who competes for South Florida Aquatic Club and whose mother swam at Acadia University in Canada, captured both the 200-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly titles. She posted a record in the latter with a time of 56.80 to top Ileana Lucos’ mark (57.30) in 2006.

“It’s so much fun,” said Golding, who has been swimming since she was 8 and turns 15 on Sunday. “High school swimming is just the best. [I can still] work on the small things. I have the basics down, but now it’s just working on turns, starts, underwater — stuff like that.”

Divers Karlee Price (STA) and South Plantation’s Logan Downey added to their résumés, becoming three-time BCAA winners. They are two-time state champions.

FOOTBALL

▪ Dillard 47, Monarch 7: The Panthers outscored the Knights 39-0 in the first quarter and never looked back on the way to a blowout homecoming victory at Otis Gray Jr. Memorial Stadium.

The 39 first-quarter points came in the last 8:07 of the quarter, starting with a 20-yard run by George Golden. Six touchdowns were scored, capped with a 36-yard catch by Bryce Oliver from quarterback Anthony “Mo” Hasan.

“Last game we came out slow and we have been working all week on coming out fast and scoring early,” Golden said. “I told Coach I was going to step up my game, and that’s what I did.”

The Panthers (4-2, 0-1) didn’t score in the second half, but the Knights (1-5, 0-2) avoided a shutout on a 20-yard interception return by Bre’Shaud Pickett.

Golden led Dillard with 113 rushing yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. Hasan passed for 90 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers defense scored two touchdowns and sacked Monarch four times.
