Flanagan football coach Devin Bush says Miramar player never hit him, as alleged

In the aftermath of ejections of two Miramar assistant coaches and one player during Friday’s District 12-8A rivalry game against Pembroke Pines Flanagan, the FHSAA on Monday revealed suspensions to the three parties and a fine of $750 to the school.

Miramar defensive coordinator A.J. Scott was suspended for a game, another assistant Josh Taylor for six games and junior defensive end Owen Carney received a year-long suspension.

According to a report in the Sun Sentinel attributing a report filed by head referee Steve Torres to the FHSAA, Carney allegedly struck Flanagan coach Devin Bush with a forearm to his back on the sideline while a play was in progress on the field and Taylor and Scott received suspensions over unsportsmanlike conduct for arguing with an official in the fourth quarter of the 31-6 loss.

Carney would be eligible to return midway through his senior season on Oct. 2, 2016.

According to the FHSAA, Miramar had not appealed the suspensions as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“We’re still in the process of researching the situation. We don’t have our formal opinion right now, so we’re reviewing the tape and getting statements,” Miramar coach Pierre Senatus said.

Bush said he did not feel the alleged forearm from Carney and disagrees with the ruling and media coverage of the incidents from the game that began with an unsportsmanlike penalty for the Patriots’ refusal to shake hands pregame and ended with 48 penalties for 480 yards combined between the two teams.

“I think they’re blowing this thing way out of proportion,” Bush said. “I’m at a loss of words right now that the people in our own county would try to vilify their own kids and people. I’m really upset right now that that is happening to kids.

“Nothing happened to me. If someone attacked me, I wouldn’t be this furious [over the ruling].”

In an email, FHSAA spokesman Corey Sobers said, “Coach Bush did not see it happen as he was watching the play.”

Senatus after the game told Miami Herald correspondent Christina De Nicola, “The referees never had control of the game,” a statement he has since recanted.
