Westminster Christian wins Region 4-1A cross-country title

Westminster Christian won the Region 4-1A cross-country title behind a 1-2 finish by Victoria Hoppe and Natasha Strump on Saturday but it’s the Warriors less heralded 3-5 runners, led by Andrea Zumpano, who will be the “X” factor in Westminster’s bid to upset Holy Trinity for the Class 1A state title next week.

Warriors coach Jose Garcia said Zumpano, especially, is as talented as any runner on the Warriors’ roster and could make things interesting if she can carry over the type of performance she usually has in practice, running No. 1 or No. 2 regularly, to the State Finals on Nov. 15.

“Our numbers 3,4,5 runners have to have that mentality, I am chasing our number one and number two Victoria and Natasha, “ said Garcia. “It has to be like that in the state Finals. It can’t just be they let them go at the starting line. They have to go with them. Zumpano has the potential to be our one or two runner on any given day.”

Hoppe clocked 20:19.15 to edge Strump (20:19.92) for her second consecutive region title and should be in the mix for a top 8 finish next week.

Westminster Academy’s Casey McCracken gave the partisan Lions’ home crowd something to cheer when he won the boys individual title in surprising run-away fashion. McCracken clocked 16:54 as a projected three-way battle between Highland Christian’s Ryan Szklany (fourth, 17:51) and Pine School’s Chase Hyland (sixth, 17:56) never materialized. Patrick Sastre and Joshua Deangulo went 10-12 to help the Lions upset projected favorite Miami Country Day, by one point (66-67).
