South Plantation shocks Flanagan in District 12-8A upset

A district considered one of the toughest in the state just got a little interesting as South Plantation finds itself atop 12-8A after upsetting nationally-ranked Flanagan 13-12 on Friday night.

Flanagan, a team considered to be a serious state championship contender in Class 8A, now finds itself in a must-win situation in a district featuring the likes of Miramar, Plantation and Cypress Bay.

Plantation coach Steve Davis joked before the season that 12-8A was Florida’s version of “the SEC West.”

Defense dominated the night on Friday as Flanagan's only scoring drives both started in South Plantation territory and ended with short runs by Stanford Samuels.

Until the fourth, the Paladins lone score came on a 90-yard punt return by Anthony Julmisse.

The Paladins (3-1) got their upset with 55 seconds as quarterback Anthony Beauchard and Johnny Huntley hooked up for a 6-yard score.

Flanagan (2-1) came into the game ranked 16th by USA Today and eighth nationally by SuperPrep.

The victory was the biggest in the short coaching tenure of South Plantation’s Nick Dellaria, the longtime assistant who took over right before the season when Doug Gatewood abruptly resigned for family reasons.

The Paladins went 4-5 last season yet now find themselves in control of their own postseason destiny.

"We have a lot of young kids who just need to improve their football knowledge,” Dellaria said. “If they do that, nothing can stop them."
