Florida’s best high school girls’ golfers have gathered in in Central Florida to tee off Tuesday in the first round of the state championships in Classes 3A, 2A and 1A.

The 3A tournament will be played at the Deer Island Golf & Lake Club in Tavares, and the 2A and 1A tournaments will be held at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in the-Hills — the 2A tournament on the Las Colinas course and the 1A tournament on the El Campeon course.

The strongest team from South Florida in 2A appeared to be Plantation American Heritage — at least until last week’s regional.

Heritage is the defending state champion but received a wake-up call at the regional when the Patriots lost to Archbishop McCarthy, 303 to 311, at the Lago Mar Country Club.

Players from McCarthy and American Heritage will be able to keep good track of each other in Tuesday’s first round as they will be paired up in the first five foursomes.

McCarthy’s starters are Michelle Rodriguez, Brook Benedetto, Georgette Garcia, Katya Barahona and Christen Simons. Heritage’s starters are Alejandra Merchan, Lorena De Antonio, Casey Weindenfeld, Sunny Li and Andreina Merchan.

Tee-off time is 8:15 a.m. with Wednesday’s second and final round starting at the same time.

BOWLING

The Coral Springs Charter girls’ and boys’ bowling teams won the District 15 championship at Sawgrass Lanes.

Defending state champion Krystina Nealon bowled a score of 553 to win individual district championship. She led Coral Glades to a second-place finish. Teammate Katie Soldano finished with a 542 for second-place honors.

Hollywood Christian’s Lauren Pemderton (507) and Archbishop McCarthy’s Maria Alejandra Chavez (491) also were state qualifiers.

Pablo Cerda led the Panthers with a three-game set score of 700. Noah Hunter finished as district runner-up, scoring 650 for Taravella.

Coral Springs’ Dylan Sucher (636) and Nathan Samuel (645) also were state qualifiers.

The qualifiers will travel to Orlando’s Boardwalk Bowling Center for the state tournament on Nov.5 and 6.
