Coral Gables football team is best of the week in Miami-Dade County

TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Coral Gables football team edged Carol City 14-12 last week thanks to a brave effort from its defense and two big plays by senior Kevin Romer. First, Romer caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Voshon Waiters and later returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards for a touchdown.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Delano Morgan, Varela, football: Rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries. He also scored on a 85-yard kickoff return.
Jerron Rollins, Columbus, football: Rollins caught five passes for 89 yards and four TDs in a 38-25 win over Jackson.
Ashley Thompson, Palmetto, girls’ volleyball: Thompson had 18 kills and eight digs to lead the Panthers to a five-set win over Varela.
Mia Boloix, MAST, girls’ volleyball: Boloix had 22 kills and 11 aces to lead the Makos over Sunset in four sets.
Josh Collins, Belen, boys’ cross-country: Collins ran a time of 16:01 to lead the Wolverines to the Park Vista Invitational title.
Claire Kennedy, Westminster Christian, girls’ cross-country: Kennedy ran a time of 21:39 to finish a Dade-best third at the Park Vista Invitational.
Leo Herrera, Belen, boys’ golf: Herrera shot a 71 to finish a Dade-best second place at the American Heritage Invitational.
Daniella Spillert, Lourdes, girls’ golf: Spillert shot a 3-under-par 68 to win the Lady Maverick Invitational.
Rafael Chang, Reagan, boys’ bowling: Chang bowled a 512 high series in a win over Braddock.
Patricia Velasco, Braddock, girls’ bowling: Velasco bowled a 453 high series in a win over Reagan.
