Columbus-Jackson football game suspended by bad weather

The Miami Columbus and Miami Jackson football teams are each considered state championship contenders this season thanks to explosive offenses and play-making defenses.

Each team dueled for a half Wednesday night at Tropical Park, with Jackson taking an 18-16 halftime lead.

But they will have to wait until Friday for a chance to finish the game.

Only seconds after senior quarterback Desmond Phillips found an opening in Columbus’ defense and ran 18 yards for a go-ahead touchdown, the stadium’s lightning detector sounded and play was suspended.

The game is scheduled to resume at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Traz Powell Stadium. It will precede the game between Miami Northwestern and American scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Traz.

Phillips ran for a 10-yard touchdown earlier and found junior Sharod Johnson open for a 65-yard touchdown strike to give the Generals a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Columbus answered by scoring 16 unanswered points highlighted by a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Alex Ros to receiver Jerron Rollins.

Ros found Rollins over the middle late in the first quarter and Rollins scampered 25 yards to cut Jackson’s lead to 12-7.

On the ensuing series, Columbus’ defense chased down Phillips into the end zone on a broken play and sacked him behind the goal line for a safety to make it 12-9.

Columbus capitalized following the free kick as another solid drive was capped by Ros’ 7-yard touchdown toss to Rollins.

Phillips, who threw for 131 yards on 8 of 9 attempts, engineered the Generals’ touchdown drive in the final two minutes of the half.

Jackson, which made the playoffs last season with a 6-5 record, defeated Weston Cypress Bay 34-3 last week. Columbus dropped a close, 25-24 decision on the road against Winter Haven, but led by two scores early before playing several reserves. The Explorers went 13-2 last season after reaching the state final for the first time since 1982.
