This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best high school varsity performer of the week (in Broward and Miami-Dade counties).
This week includes nominees from high school baseball, flag football, softball, and boys’ volleyball.

Torri Cotman, Edison flag football: the sophomore was named Game MVP as she caught seven passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns and also returned an interception 22 yards for another score as the Red Raiders won their second consecutive FHSAA 1A state title with a 33-12 victory over Boynton Beach Somerset at the Advent Health Training Center in Tampa.
Julian Diaz, St. Thomas Aquinas baseball: the senior pitcher allowed one run (none earned) on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 for the complete game win as the Raiders beat Land O’Lakes 4-1 in the FHSAA Class 6A state semifinal. That saved the rest of the Raiders’ pitching staff for the following day at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers en route to their second consecutive state championship victory.
Gio Gurgel, Coral Springs Charter softball: the senior went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, a walk, a run and 5 RBI as the Panthers won an FHSAA Class 3A state semifinal over Lakeland McKeel Academy and then was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI in a state championship victory over Eustis.
Lucas Riva, Columbus boys’ volleyball: the senior captain had a match-high 13 kills, including the match winner, as the Explorers won their first FHSAA state title in this sport with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Winter Garden Horizon in Class 3A at Polk State College in Winter Haven. He also had 9 serve received, 8 digs, 2 aces, 1 block. In a 3-set state semifinal win over Loxahatchee Seminole Ridge, he had a match-high 14 kills with 8 digs, 5 serve received, 2 blocks, 1 ace.
Gio Rojas, Douglas baseball: the senior pitcher allowed no runs, one hit and two walks while striking out 12 in 6 2/3 innings as the Eagles won their sixth consecutive FHSAA state title with a 2-1 victory over No.1 nationally-ranked Venice in Class 7A at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate and produced the game’s first RBI on a bunt single in the first.
Marcos Sanchez, True North boys’ volleyball: the sophomore had a match-high 29 kills with 7 blocks and 10 digs as the Titans won their first FHSAA Class 1A state title by beating Tampa SLAM in a 5-set thriller 25-22, 25-19, 26-28, 36-38, 15-12 at Polk State College in Winter Haven.
