This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best high school varsity performer of the week (in Broward and Miami-Dade counties).

This week includes nominees from high school baseball, softball, track & field and boys’ volleyball.

Nick Castillo, Archbishop McCarthy boys’ volleyball: the junior had 28 kills, 5 blocks, 1 assist, 1 ace, 18 digs, and 18 serve received as the Mavericks defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 to win the Region 3-2A title. He had 15 kills, 4 blocks, 12 digs, 2 assists and 7 serve received in a 3-set region semifinal win over Riviera Beach Suncoast.

Giordan del Riesgo, Belen Jesuit boys’ volleyball: the junior had 25 assists, 5 digs and 3 aces as the Wolverines won the Region 4-2A title by beating Varela 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19. He had 24 assists, 2 kills, 2 aces, and 7 digs in a 5-set region semifinal win over Pembroke Pines Charter.

Raymond Hawkins, Flanagan track & field: the junior won a state title in the long jump (7.33 meters) and was part of the state champion 400-meter relay (40.75 seconds) to help lead the Class 4A Falcons to their first team state title in track & field. He was also third in the 100 meters (10.48 seconds) and seventh in the 200 meters.

Olivia Higgins, Coral Springs track & field: the junior was Broward’s lone individual girls’ state champion in Class 4A, winning the 800-meter race (2:09.09).

Gianluca Padilla, Columbus track & field: the senior won the discus (48.91 meters) and shot put (15.79 meters) state titles in Class 4A for the third place Explorers.

Esaul Pena, Miami Springs baseball: the junior went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI as the Golden Hawks beat Gulliver Prep 7-2 in the deciding third game for the Region 4-3A title. In the Game 1 win, a 12-7 decision, he walked 4 times and scored twice.

Cash Remington, Cardinal Gibbons boys’ volleyball: the senior had 19 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs, 1 assist, and 10 serve received as the Chiefs won the Region 2-3A title by eliminating West Palm Beach King’s Academy 25-16, 25-19, 25-19. He had 15 kills, 10 aces, 1 block, 3 digs, and 9 serve received in a 3-set region semifinal win over Pine Crest.

Analys Uriarte, Schoolhouse Prep softball: the senior pitcher allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 1 in a 10-2 win over Miami Christian for the Region 4-1A title (its first) and struck out the side in 1 shutout inning of relief for the save in a 2-0 region semifinal win over Vero Beach Master’s Academy.

Courtney Wahlbrink, Coral Springs Charter softball: the junior pitcher won two big road games, leading CSC over Somerset Academy Silver Palms Miami and Cardinal Gibbons to win the Region 4-3A title. She allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 11 in a 3-2 win over Somerset, a team that defeated them the past 3 seasons in the region final and then allowed one run (none earned) on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 4 in a 3-1 win over Cardinal Gibbons, a team that beat CSC twice this season.
